Listening is a skill that only a select few have honed into as a ministry. These people can intuit which persons need to be listened to for their spirits’ sake.
You must be a trustworthy person, one listeners are convinced will keep their conversations secret and only between the two of you.
You must care about people of any walk of life. Individual people must be important to you, as well as their concerns.
You must observe their situations objectively. You cannot bring any of your self into the conversation unless for a timely example-and only for a short time-then revert quickly back to the talker’s concern.
You must concentrate on their concerns only.
You must see both sides of the people’s issues while listening so you may offer helpful suggestions they have not considered. If the people have seen those possibilities, you compliment them on their inner wisdom and that they can lean on their own understanding. People need to be affirmed of their own wise insights into their lives.
You must listen according to people’s various personalities and react accordingly. Some will need physical touching for assurance, while others will only want an occasional “uh, huh,” and others will need reassuring words.
You must be able to see into a person’s spirit. What does this person need? Right then, how can you help her? A woman has difficulty carrying her books while she uses a cane. Offer to give her a sturdy bag for her books, or if they’re library books, offer to delivery them for her. In other words, you must be that person to see what she needs.
Do not hurry people. Forget about time. Listening takes patience, which is generally what a listener has been graced with.
Let the people know you are available to listen. Make your words sincere, and then be true to your promise when that someone calls or knocks at your door.
To be a good listener, you must overlook your self, care about others before your self, and keep secrets. How do you know if you’re called to this loving ministry of listening? After a few listening sessions-even hour-long ones-you will feel immeasurable joy of having helped another individual.
